Yorkley Village Hall with the F.W. Harvey
Society present:
An
Exhibition of Photographs by Michael
Barnes
F.W. (Will) Harvey
lived his early life in Minsterworth and was never far from the magnificent river
Severn. The importance to his soul of
the river and the landscape was expressed in A Prayer:
O Lord, within my heart for ever
Set this sweet shape of land and winding river,
That I may taste their comfort till I die
And feed upon them in Eternity
To celebrate 90 years since the poem Elvers was published in 1921, the
F.W. Harvey Society in association with Yorkley Village Hall is delighted to
present a Visual Journey of a Gloucester
Photographer from the Mythe Bridge at Tewkesbury to the Severn Bridge at
Aust featuring images of the river with its seasonal and daily changes and the
people who still fish in the traditional way. The exhibition includes new pictures as well
as the Yorkley landscape.
Opening times: Sunday 3rd July
12.00-3.30 pm; (Monday closed); Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 10.30 am-3.30
pm; Friday 8th July 3.30 pm-8.00 pm.
Included in the exhibition will be the F.W. Harvey Table, Harvey photographs,
some lave nets and a putcher. Refreshments
(tea, coffee and cakes) will be available and F.W. Harvey books will be on
sale; and on Saturday, a general book sale, the popular Yorkley Bookery.
This week-long
exhibition will close with a talk at 7.30pm
on Saturday 9th July: Exploring the
River Severn by John Powell, Secretary of the Severn Estuary Fishermen’s Association.
John Powell is an experienced Severn fisherman who will be discussing
the ancient arts of lave net fishing and putchers. He will be showing old film of the river and
its traditions, photographs of the building of the old Severn Railway Bridge (taken
by the engineer who built it, George William Keeling), and discussing the
rebellion by Severn fishermen of Viney Hill and Yorkley in 1903.
Events are free,
with donations to F.W. Harvey Society and Yorkley Village Hall.
